Dr. Ross Grant, musical director and conductor of the Northwest Community Band, is beginning his fourth year as head band director at
Azle High School in Azle, Texas.
Dr. Grant's career as a music educator spans 27 years. Previously, he served for two years on the faculty of Texas Christian University, where he taught band method courses, supervised student teachers, assisted with the TCU Marching and Concert Bands, and directed the Basketball Band. Prior to that, he was Director of Bands at DeSoto High School in DeSoto, Texas. Under his direction, the DeSoto Marching Band was a finalist at the UIL State Marching Contests six times, winning the Governors Cup for "best overall artistic performance" in 1985. The DeSoto band was the only Texas band invited to the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1992 and again in 2002.
In 1997, Dr. Grant launched the "Concert in the Meyerson" series at the Morton Meyerson Symphony Hall in Dallas, featuring junior and senior high bands, guest artists, commissioned works, community church choirs and school choirs.
Dr. Grant earned bachelor's degrees in music education and music performance/trumpet from Ouachita Baptist University, a master's degree in music education/trumpet from the University of North Texas, and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in music education/conducting from UNT. He has served as a clinician and adjudicator in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois and Arizona. His wife, Liz, is head band director at Briarhill Middle School in Highland Village, Texas. They have two children, Gary and Gina.
